Hi! We’re Jamie and Robin and we have been where you are – charged with creating presentations (written or verbal) as part of our job with no training about what makes a great presentation or keeps an audience engaged.
Our work has been primarily in the nonprofit and public sectors. If you’re familiar with this magical land you know it’s a place where truly innovative projects are being implemented with scarce resources. It’s also where phenomenal people are working tirelessly to make social changes. Sadly this magical land is also where paper clips are likely to be rationed and at least one person in the office is stuck with a computer that’s been around since the Clinton administration.
Essentially, people working in the these fields are expected to accomplish a lot with very little and they’re incredibly good at it. However, if there is one exception to this rule it’s probably in the presentation arena. We have a tendency to do things like get very excited about our data, schedule a three hour presentation to share it, and then attempt to explain it using a series of complicated graphs and hieroglyphics. We’re both guilty!
To make a long story short, after many years of putting people to sleep with these methods, we thought it was time to make some changes. And so our journey began. We’ve spent the last several years researching and testing ways to not only capture and hold an audience’s attention, but to inspire audiences. We’ve spent countless hours refining the presentation planning process, identifying free resources, and learning how to maximize the tools we already had. (This is not a complaint as we have a sick obsession for these things and we’ve loved every minute of it.) It’s also important to know that we aren’t graphic designers, artists, or especially tech savvy. Everything that we do, you can do too.
Our high point – the point we knew we were on to something – was when people told us that our presentation about logic models (yes, logic models) was the best presentation they’d ever seen! And after having some presentation successes, we started to get requests to provide tips and assist others. It’s been pretty amazing sharing some of what we’ve learned with our friends and colleagues. It’s been so amazing that we decided to take it to the next level and share it all here with you. Thanks for joining us.
Who are we otherwise? We are avid DIYers from opposite sides of the country. California meets Maine for a blend of “Best Coast” and “Right Coast” spirit and approach. We clicked from the day we met, and we feel fortunate to call each other friends and be partners in this project. It’s tons of fun for us to work together and learn from each other.
A few more things about us: we have four kids, three pets and two full-time jobs between us. Sometimes we have plants. If you’ve looked around our site you can probably tell that we like to do two things quite frequently: crack jokes and communicate visually. We also love being at the beach and eating Mexican food. You probably can’t tell either of those things from looking around our site…but we just told you…so now you know. Feel free to send us your epic burrito recipes.
You can also learn a bit more about us if you keep scrolling down. We’ve attempted to share a few more fun facts about ourselves in quasi infographic form. Enjoy!
